Description

Bredwardine Lodge is a former school, now a hostel, dating to 1856. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a tile roof with stone coped verges and a chimney stack to the left containing four diamond shafts. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with one limb extending north and the other west, complemented by a contemporary wing extending south from the western corner. The architectural style is Vernacular Gothic, exhibiting balanced asymmetry. The lodge is one storey in height, with attics. A gabled wing is situated on the left, and incorporates an entrance sheltered by a lean-to canopy in the right wall. The main facade features two gables, with the right gable being larger and projecting forward. There are three windows in the attics of each gable; these are composed of two trefoiled lights, with a gabled dormer centrally positioned. The ground floor has a door to the left gable and a window with four shouldered lights to the right. A catslide roof covers the central entrance, which is flanked by two square-headed slit windows. A bell cote sits on the roof, containing a bell.
