Description
This barn, located about 300 yards north of Whitfield, is probably from the late 19th century. It is constructed from oak, brick, and steel, featuring tiled and corrugated iron roofs. The barn has five structural bays that are aligned roughly north to south. The west elevation includes a mid-20th century lean-to with a corrugated iron roof, and there is one loft opening on each gable.
Inside, the barn has wall-plates supported by eight oak piers. These piers rest on octagonal moulded sandstone bases and are square in section with an attached half-column on each face. The half-columns and piers are connected at the top by necking, plain capitals, and part-octagonal abaci. The piers are believed to have been salvaged from the lowest open stage of the former town hall in High Town, Hereford, which was designed around 1600, possibly by John Abel, and had 27 such piers before it was demolished in 1862. This listing highlights the significance of the piers, while noting that the barn itself is not of special architectural interest.
