Description
The lychgate to the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist dates from around 1870. It features stone plinths, timber cills, and a superstructure topped with a plain tiled roof. The structure is supported by two battered plinths that carry the cills and four posts adorned with carved boards and braces. These elements support the tie-beams and wall-plates of the roof. Each gable is set back behind the roof verges and is boarded, except for a lancet shape created by braces between the queen-posts and collar. The gates are diagonally braced and boarded, featuring delicate cut-out trefoils in each resulting triangle. The design is reminiscent of the work of G. E. Street and his followers.
