Description

The Preaching Cross in the grounds of Coningsby Hospital is a 14th-century structure with later additions, made of ashlar sandstone. It features a six-sided base with four steps that support a traceried arcade, which is enhanced by angle buttresses enclosing the shaft-base adorned with traceried blind arcading. The shaft is supported by six columns that hold up a ribbed vault, with machicolation above, and a plain shaft that culminates in a decorated cross-base. This cross is notable for being the only remaining example of a friar's preaching cross in England and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
