Description
36, 38, and 40 Widemarsh Street are former houses now used as offices, dating from the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco and feature a slate mansard roof with four brick chimney stacks. They have a three-unit plan and rise three storeys above cellars, presenting a six-window range. The facade includes five pairs of French windows with overlights, set within plain architraves and adorned with cast-iron balconies on brackets, all beneath a lead roof. A storey band runs across the front, and there are four recessed 3/6 sash windows flanked by grooved pilasters, along with two additional 3/6 sashes with pilasters. The wood eaves are supported by console brackets. The entrances are located to the right and consist of fielded-panel doors topped with fanlights in round-headed coved cases and surrounded by moulded architraves. There is a rusticated, grooved storey band, and the unit to the right features two 1/1 sash windows, while the rest of the ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts. At the rear, there are three roof dormers, brick modillion eaves, and a 20th-century extension to No. 40.
