Description
This is a dovecote located about 10 meters west of Court House Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century and restored in the mid-20th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble and features a conical stone tile roof with a circular plan. The south side has a low entrance that includes a chamfered wooden architrave and a ledged and boarded door. The roof is adorned with three gabled dormers, each containing 2-light louvred windows, and is topped by a glover that is gabled in three directions.
Inside, the dovecote has a potence that is still in working order, supported by curved wooden braces, and a ladder with wooden rungs. There are 18 tiers of nesting boxes, with each alternate tier featuring an alighting ledge, totaling around 600 nesting boxes. The roof structure includes a truss with two raking struts, with the principals rising to the glover. Additionally, two secondary trusses are positioned at a 60-degree angle to the main truss and have hanging wall-posts. This dovecote is a perfectly preserved example and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
