Description
The Clarke monument, located about 12 yards south of the south transept of the Church of St Mary, is a chest tomb and sarcophagus dating from 1804 and 1810. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a moulded base and cornice. The monument has wide corner balusters adorned with paterae, and each end panel displays a raised urn. Atop the tomb is a low hipped capping that supports a small sarcophagus, which also has a hipped capping. The feet of the monument are scrolled with a reversed batter on the side and end panels. The inscription on the chest tomb commemorates the daughter of James and Sarah Clarke, who died in 1804, while the sarcophagus is dedicated to their sons William, George, and John, who died in 1810, 1813, and 1817, respectively.
