Description

The Browns is an early 17th-century farmhouse, extended in the late 17th century, with some mid-20th century alterations. It is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, standing on a rubble plinth and covered by a machine-tile roof. The building is arranged in an L-shape, with limbs extending to the south and west. A substantial stack is located on the north gable of the original range, constructed of rubble with a brick shaft. The original north/south range was two bays long, extended by one bay to the south. The east front displays two storeys, featuring three sets of two-light casement windows. The ground floor has four windows, all two-light casements with plank weatherings. A small porch with a lean-to tiled roof and glazed front is situated to the left of the centre. The timber framing is composed of three rectangular panels in height, incorporating triangular corner braces. The later gable-end truss features three struts to the collar and V-struts in the apex. Inside, the ceiling beams are chamfered and moulded in the later part of the 17th century.
