Description
No. 16 Corn Square is a shop and dwelling dating from the 15th century, with later alterations. The building features plaster with painted framing and a steep-pitched plain tile gable roof. It has two storeys and a two-window range, with 19th-century three-light casements that include clerestory lights, all set in moulded cases. The weathered carved and scalloped barge-boards add to its character.
The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front with a central entrance, covered by a slate pentice roof, and a jetty that is underbuilt in the 18th century. On the left side, facing School Lane, there are four 20th-century windows and a leaded light, situated between curved passing-braces over a deep jetty supported by massive joists and cusped brackets. The ground floor also features various brick panels, two 20th-century shop windows, a 19th-century window with a small casement, and a 19th-century half-glazed door. The interior has not been inspected. No. 4 School Lane, which is included in this listing, was first listed on February 9, 1973.
