Description
The Blakemore Monument is a pedestal monument located approximately 15 meters south-west of the Church of St Swithin, dating from around 1855. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a square-set, moulded plinth on a stepped base, designed in a Gothic style. The monument has a stepped moulded capping with a short pinnacle, and below the inscription panels, there is a band of quatrefoils. The panels are framed by cusped arches and flanked by miniature stepped buttress motifs on each side. The pinnacle is decorated with stiff-leaf embellishments and has implied tracery below, consisting of two cusped lights with a rounded shape. This monument commemorates Richard Blakemore Esq of The Leys in this parish, who died in 1855, along with other members of the Blakemore family.
