Description
This is a dovecote and attached barn and cow house, likely from the 18th century, located about 10 yards north of Kipperknoll. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and features a corrugated iron roof, while the dovecote has a hipped slate roof. The barn is approximately four bays long and runs north to south, with a square dovecote forming an L-plan projection to the east at the south end. The barn likely includes a mid-18th century part timber-framed two-bay stable and loft at the north end, which is now connected to the main barn and cow house by an extension.
The main barn has two levels; the lower level serves as a cow house and is mostly obscured on the west side by a 20th-century prefabricated shed. There is a plain doorway on the left side, while the upper level features gable loft entrances at both ends and a row of nine pigeon holes above the left-hand doorway. The link block is primarily clad in corrugated iron. The stable on the left has a rubble ground floor with a central doorway flanked by simple window openings, and a low timber-fronted, partly weather-boarded upper level. The east side of the stable is notable for having a row of nine pigeon holes above a doorway that aligns with the one on the opposite side.
The former north gable end of the main barn and cow house includes pigeon nesting boxes with ledges on either side of the loft entrance, which is now hidden by the link block. The dovecote consists of two stages topped with a small pyramidal glover above the truncated hipped roof. It has one window on the first stage facing south and west, a doorway on the ground floor to the north, a later partially blocked doorway to the south, and a lean-to on the west side.
