Description

A pair of town houses dating from the early 19th century, situated on one of the main streets in Bromyard, adjacent to the church and market square. The building is constructed from stone, laid in courses, with a slate roof and brick stacks located centrally and at either gable end. The plan is roughly square, with attached outbuildings to the rear.

The two-storey, four-bay front (west) elevation is roughly symmetrical. The doorway to the right has deep panelled reveals set under a flat hood supported by heavy console brackets. It is flanked by two-over-two sash windows set in moulded cases. To the left (north), the doorway is set under a pedimented hood on shaped brackets, also flanked by two-over-two sash windows in moulded cases. The first floor features two-over-two sash windows with moulded flush surrounds. The interior has not been inspected.

Bromyard is a small market town first recorded around 840 AD. Nos. 16 and 18 Church Street are positioned in an area that was fully built up by the early 17th century, although some plots have been redeveloped since then.

The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural interest as a good example of early 19th-century town houses and for its group value with the numerous other listed buildings along Church Street.
