Description
This is an early 19th century town house located on Church Street in Bromyard. The building is constructed from stone laid in courses, with a slate roof and a brick ridge stack. It has a roughly U-shaped plan, consisting of a main north-south range facing the street, and wings extending at right angles to the north and south. The two-storey front to Church Street is symmetrical, with three bays. The central entrance has a glazed and panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above, set within a panelled doorcase featuring a moulded hood on console brackets. Windows throughout are 2/2 sash windows with marginal glazing, set in moulded surrounds with projecting sills. The interior has not been inspected. Bromyard is a small market town first recorded around 840. No. 24 Church Street is situated on a principal thoroughfare, adjoining the church and market square, which developed into Verterus Vicus in the late 13th century and later became known as Shurford Streate in 1575. This central area was largely built up by the early 17th century. The building is designated at Grade II for its architectural interest as a good example of an early 19th century town house reflecting vernacular traditions, and for its group value with the other listed buildings on Church Street.
