Description

A pair of town houses dating from the early 19th century, situated on Church Street in Bromyard. They are constructed of brick, with a slate roof and brick ridge and gable end stacks. No. 20 has a roughly square plan, while No. 22 is L-shaped, with the main range facing north-south and a wing extending at right angles to the south.

The building has two storeys and a symmetrical three-bay front to Church Street. It features two panelled doors, each set under a pedimental hood supported by shaped brackets. The windows are sliding sash windows set in segmental-headed openings with moulded flush cases.

The interior has not been inspected.

Bromyard is a small market town first recorded around 840. Nos. 20 and 22 Church Street stand on a principal thoroughfare, adjacent to the church and market square, which historically extended south into Sherford Street. This central area of the town was largely built up by the early 17th century, with some plots redeveloped since then.

The buildings are designated at Grade II. Their designation reflects their architectural interest as a good example of early 19th century town houses representing vernacular traditions, as well as their group value in the context of the numerous other listed buildings along Church Street.
