Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church built in 1865 by E Haycock Jnr, located on the site of a former priory associated with the Tironensian branch of the Benedictine order. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof. The church includes a west tower, a nave with a north aisle and a south porch, and a chancel with a north vestry.

The west tower consists of three stages, adorned with a string course and an embattled parapet. Each stage has single lancet windows, and there is a clock face on the south side. The nave has a plinth and a string course that continues over the windows, serving as a label. It features four bays, with one single traceried light on the left and two windows on the right that have two cinquefoil-headed lights and a quatrefoil in a roundel, positioned above the gabled south porch with a trefoil-headed outer doorway. The north aisle has four similar two-light windows.

The chancel is highlighted by a tripartite window with taller outer trefoil-headed lights flanking a central shorter light, along with a trefoil in a roundel, and a three-light east window. Inside, there is a four-bay arcade in the north aisle with two-centred arched heads and circular piers that have moulded bases and capitals. The nave and chancel feature open arch-braced trusses. On the south wall of the chancel, there are two wall tablets, both memorials to John Greenly, who died in 1729, and William Greenly, who died in 1834, each with a broken pediment and a cartouche of arms, supported by Doric pilasters.
