Description
Ashley Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1652, built in a timber-framed style with wattle-and-daub infill, which has largely been refaced with sandstone rubble and partially rendered on the south front. The building has a T-shaped plan, with the main block oriented east to west and a cross-wing at the east end, along with additional extensions to the west that extend south. It features a main axial stack in the cross-wing and a later gable-end stack on the main block.
The farmhouse has two storeys and attics, with the north entrance front showcasing the gable end of the cross-wing to the left. This gable reveals square panelled timber-framing, a 2-light casement window in the gable, and a tripartite glazing bar sash window on both the ground and first floors. To the right, there is a ledged doorway with a lean-to porch. The main block to the right has a group of four square lights below the eaves and above the line of the lean-to main entrance porch. It also features a three-light casement window to the right, a ground floor three-light casement window to the lean-to, and two 2-light casement windows to the right, along with a panelled door on the west return of the lean-to.
The datestone is located in the south gable end of the cross-wing. Inside, the farmhouse retains a cross-beamed ceiling and a large open fireplace in the cross-wing, which includes a bread oven. The staircase features imported 17th-century twisted balusters.
