Description

The Spencer headstone, located approximately 8 metres south of the south transept of the old Church of St Mary, is a Grade II listed headstone dating from 1730. It is made of slate and features a small, rectangular shape adorned with two round-faced winged angels and a heart with the inscription "be ye ready." The raised letters on the headstone read: "HERE LIES THE BODY OF JOHN SPENCER HE DIED JUN THE 30 1730 Aged 40 YEAR," followed by an inscribed verse. This headstone is considered an excellent example of its type.
