Description
This is a country house, originally known as Tollerton Hall, now part of St Hugh's College. The core of the building dates back to the 17th century, with significant alterations in the 18th century and a largely complete rebuilding in the 19th century for Pendock Neale Barry, followed by 20th-century extensions. The house is rendered, with some areas in ashlar, and features a hidden roof concealed by parapets, with a prominent central tower. It is built on a plinth.
The entrance front has nine bays, with two storeys to the outer bays and three storeys to the central three. The outer bays on each side are embattled and have projecting turrets, each with three arrow slits and supported on a corbel table. The central three bays also project and have an ashlar parapet. A single-story embattled porte-cochere occupies the central three bays, with outer embattled turrets. The Gothick arched entrance is now partially glazed, with a C20 door and pointed arched overlight. An inner doorway is flanked by engaged octagonal piers with moulded capitals and a band stretching between the capitals. Pointed arched windows are located either side of the porch, each with pointed arched fixed lights and tracery. Below are three glazing bar casements. Above are six similar casements, with three glazing bar cross casements in the central three bays. Above those are three pointed arched Gothick glazing bar casements. To the right, a lower, two-and-a-half-story, three-bay embattled wing is set back at an oblique angle, featuring three round arched recessed panels with single round arched casements, alternating with two buttresses. A chamfered band links the buttresses and runs across the entire front. Above this are three similar casements, and on the top floor are three further casements.
Further to the right and slightly projecting is a diagonally buttressed two-stage clock tower with an ashlar parapet. The lower stage has a double chamfered carriage archway. Above is a quadripartite casement with two transoms, and above that a clock face. A wall, attached to the right, links the house to the church and is listed separately. Turrets also feature on the east and south fronts. The east front has some arched openings and a single window with Gothick glazing bars. The south or garden front has a three-story canted bay with various sashes and casements, and a C20 extension projecting from the left.
The interior includes a decorative rib vaulted entrance hall with a pendant centre. Reveals to doorways and windows in the hall have Gothick blind panelling, and the inner doorway also features Gothick panelling. A room to the left of the main entrance has Ionic columns and a decorative ceiling and cornice. Two further rooms have decoratively carved ceilings and cornices, and a single room has a carved cornice. Tollerton Hall was renamed Roclaveston Manor by Pendock Neale Barry.
