Description

A group of headstones located approximately 12 metres south of the south transept of the old Church of St Mary, dating from the early to late 18th century, primarily made of slate. The following eight headstones are notable:

  1. A stone headstone with a double arched top featuring a large, crude, round-faced winged angel. It is inscribed in large capitals to Mary, daughter of John Bonser, by Mary his wife, likely from the early to mid 18th century.

  2. A small, rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel dedicated to Mary, daughter of Thomas Sumner, by Anne his wife, who died in 1710 at the age of 10 years. The back of the stone lists five additional children who all died in infancy: Eliz. (died 1696), Tho. (died 1696), Ann (died 1697), John (died 1698), and John (died 1702).

  3. A larger rectangular headstone with a round-faced winged angel commemorating Thomas Sumner, who died in 1727 at the age of 62, and Ann, his wife, who died in 1736 at the age of 67.

  4. A tall, classical headstone with finely cut details and a shaped top, dedicated to Ferneough Barratt, who died in 1799, signed by 'Wood'.

  5. A headstone with a shaped top and finely cut details, including flowing foliage, commemorating Mary, wife of Ferneough Barratt, who died in 1791.

  6. A rectangular headstone with finely cut flowing decoration dedicated to Wm. Parker junior, who died in 1733.

  7. A rectangular headstone with flowing decoration commemorating Eliz., daughter of Wm. and Mary Parker, who died in 1757 at the age of 17.

  8. A shaped, classical headstone with finely cut details dedicated to Wm. Parker, who died in 1792, and Mary, his wife, who died in 1794.
