Description

Nos. 1 and 3, Brookside, are a group of three cottages, now combined into two dwellings. They were originally built in the mid-17th century and altered and extended in the 18th century, later restored around 1980. The cottages are timber framed with red brick nogging, along with brick and rendered extensions. The roofs are covered with pantiles, and a red brick stack is located on the right gable. The gables are brick-coped with kneelers, and the building sits on a plinth, with rubble in places.

The cottages are one and a half storeys high, spanning eight bays. The fourth, fifth and sixth bays from the left are set back and have exposed timber framing, with rendered infill to the first floor. The right two bays are constructed of red brick with blue brick headers. The remaining bays include some blue brick chequering. The windows are Yorkshire sashes, and doorways have plank doors, some within former segmental arched openings. Above the ground floor windows are smaller sashes. Two dormers are present, one with two small sashes and the other with a single sash.

Visible remains of the original timber frame include five posts, two studs, four braces, a wall plate, and a rail. Attached to the right is a single-bay wing constructed of red brick and pantiles. This wing features a tripartite sash window and a single blocked opening above.
