Description
The Ferns is a house with an adjoining railing, shop, cottage, and stable, built around 1785 and in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick and features gabled and lean-to pantile roofs, some of which are glazed. The building has dentillated eaves and three gable stacks, one of which is external. It is two storeys high and has a layout that is three bays wide and five bays deep, forming an L-plan.
The windows are primarily Yorkshire sashes, with the front ground floor openings having segmental heads. The street-facing side includes a central panelled door with an overlight, flanked by single sash windows. Above this, there are three sashes, with the central one being the smallest. There is a Nottingham and Derby Insurance plaque on the exterior.
The property features an adjoining hairpin railing and gate. To the right, there is a lower two-storey lean-to shop with a door and a shuttered canted bay window. The northwest side has a glazing bar casement and a door in the return angle. The adjoining cottage to the right has a small casement and two plank doors, with two small leaded Yorkshire sashes above. The stable to the right has two stable doors flanked by single slatted casements, all with segmental heads, and above, to the left, there is a plank door, while to the right, there are two Yorkshire sashes.
