Description
The Grove is a small country house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a hipped slate roof with a large central chimney stack. The house has two storeys plus a basement and is designed with three main bays. The first and second floors, along with the eaves, have decorative bands, and there are single-storey outshuts on either side, each with a basement. These outshuts have floor bands and shaped ashlar coped parapets, each topped with a single finial.
The basement includes a central arch that provides access to a recessed glazed door with a fanlight above. On either side of the arch, there are flights of steps leading up to the central doorway, which is pedimented and features double glazed doors and a traceried fanlight. The doorway is supported by single fluted columns beneath an open modillion pediment. Flanking the doorway are large 19th-century tripartite glazing bar sashes, which have replaced the original bay windows. Above the entrance, there is a central segmental-headed glazing bar sash, flanked by single Diocletian windows, all of which have glazing bars.
Separating the central three bays from the slightly recessed outshuts are single giant pilasters. Each outshut has a single glazing bar sash on the upper floor, with the eastern one featuring larger panes. The basement may have originally included loggias. To the west of the main house is a later 19th-century extension that is two storeys high and has two bays. This extension is also rendered, with a hipped roof and a rendered stack at the rear. Additional later 19th-century additions can be found at the rear and to the east of the property.
