Description

Winthorpe House is a small country house dating from the late 18th century, with additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The east front is built of red brick with ashlar dressings, topped by a hipped slate roof, four stacks, and a wooden cornice decorated with modillions. The house is two storeys high, with three bays, and a basement under the northern bay. It stands on a plinth. The central bay is slightly bowed and has five steps with iron railings leading to a recessed central doorway. The doorway has a glazed door and a traceried fanlight, set within an ashlar surround of single pilasters that taper to elongated, fluted capitals topped with brackets bearing foliate decoration. These brackets support a modillion cornice and projecting open pediment. Beneath the pediment, imposts support an arch over the door. Flanking the central bay are single brick pilasters which support a fluted ashlar arch with two floral decorated voussoirs and a keystone. Above this arch is an open pediment with a modillion cornice, which extends along the eaves. The two outer bays have arched sash windows with glazing bars to the ground floor, and single sash windows with glazing bars to the first floor. Giant brick pilasters are set on either side. To the north, a 19th-century canted bay window spans two storeys with an attic. This bay window has three arched sash windows with glazing bars to the ground floor, with three sash windows under segmental arches above. The attic has a dormer with a pair of sash windows with glazing bars. An outer giant brick pilaster is also present. A similar bay window is located on the south front.
