Description
40 and 41 Market Place is a former coaching inn, now serving as a shop and bank, built in 1721 with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a hipped pantile roof with two ridge stacks. It has chamfered quoins, a second-floor band, and moulded eaves. The structure is three storeys high and has an eight-window range of plain sashes, with the first-floor windows featuring brick flat arches. In the center of the first floor, there is a niche containing a bust of the Saracen's Head. The ground floor showcases an eight-bay Tuscan arcade with a continuous cornice, and the fourth bay includes a carriage entrance. To the left of the entrance is a fully glazed late 20th-century shopfront, while to the right is a rendered wall with a plinth, two twelve-pane sashes, and single mid-20th-century doors with overlights. The left door has two leaves. The right rear wing of the ground floor was rebuilt in the late 20th century and is also brick with a pantile roof and a single gable stack. This wing is two storeys plus attics and features a seven-window range of segment-headed twelve-pane sashes, with the three on the right being smaller. Above, to the left, there are two raking dormers. The interior is reported to contain an 18th-century staircase and plaster overmantels.
