Description
Langford Hall is a country house built around 1780 to 1790 by John Carr of York for the Duncombe family. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped slate roof with ashlar dressings, standing on an ashlar plinth. The building has 2½ storeys and a symmetrical facade with five bays; the central three bays slightly project and are topped with a pediment that has an ashlar cornice and swag.
The central doorway is accessed by a platform of five steps and is framed by a porch with Doric columns, supporting a fluted frieze and a pediment with a decorated cornice. The door itself is six-panelled, with fluted carving along the borders and patera in the corners. The architrave features two columns supporting an arch with a traceried fanlight beneath it. On either side of the doorway are two glazing bar sash windows, with five similar sashes above and five smaller but similar sashes on the second floor. The first-floor windows have stone balusters beneath them, with a double band of ashlar running under the balusters and a single band above, extending across the entire facade. There is also a single ashlar band under the ground floor windows, and the top floor windows have ashlar sills.
At the rear, there is a single-storey brick extension. Inside, the house retains good original features, including fireplaces, doors, architraves, and coving. The contemporary staircase is illuminated by a large Venetian window.
