Description
Cranfield House, built in 1709 for Canon George Mompesson, is a former prebendal house of Oxton, now functioning as a private residence. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. It has a plinth, rusticated quoins, a first-floor band, moulded eaves, and two brick ridge stacks. The front facade displays five windows, all of which are glazing bar sashes with plain surrounds. The central first-floor window is distinguished by a moulded surround and a segmental pediment that breaks into the eaves. The attic includes three gabled dormers. The entrance features a moulded doorcase with a half-glazed door and an overlight. Inside, there are two panelled rooms and an original staircase. The design of Cranfield House closely resembles Mompesson House in Salisbury, which was built around 1701 by another member of the Mompesson family. The adjoining brick garden walls have gabled coping, and the street side features a central pair of square stone gatepiers with simple wrought iron gates. This building is one of the nine remaining prebendal houses that were formerly associated with Southwell Minster.
