Description

Orchard House is a late 18th century house, dated 1806, originally built as the Master’s house for a bleachworks and linen manufactory. It was constructed for George and Mary Scales. The house is of brick construction with stone dressings and a slate roof. Architectural details include a plinth, a band to the first floor, moulded eaves, a low parapet, coped gables, and two gable stacks. The windows have segmental brick heads. The design features a slightly projecting central bay. The house is three storeys high and has a three-window front. The central bay contains a 12-pane fixed light, flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Above these, three unglazed windows are positioned, the central one being smaller. The ground floor features a wooden doorcase with a pediment supported by brackets ornamented with feathers. The doorcase surrounds a six-panel door with a fanlight; on either side are glazing bar sashes. A mid-20th century addition extends to the rear of the property.
