Description
The Former Subscription Library, now a shop, dates from around 1830 and features late 20th-century alterations. Designed by William Fowler, the building is constructed of brick with a yellow brick front, red brick, and stone dressings. It has a hipped slate roof and a rear wall stack. Architectural details include a plinth, a panelled first-floor band, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The structure is two storeys high with a five-window range of 12-pane sashes that have flat arches. The projecting centre contains three windows beneath a pediment. The full-width late 20th-century shopfront features a continuous fascia. The right return facing Church Street has a rounded corner with a plain sash and a 20th-century door that has a polychrome round head and a blank fanlight, both openings adorned with keystones. To the right, there is a plain sash window, and below it, a 19th-century shop window that has been reglazed in the late 20th century, featuring a polychrome segmental head.
