Description

Gascoigne's Sale Room and O. Wendels is a house that has been converted into a sale room and shop. It dates from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century, mid-19th century, mid-20th century, and a late 20th-century addition. The building is constructed of brick, mostly colourwashed, with stone dressings and a pantile roof. It features a plinth on the southeast side and has two storeys plus garrets, with a four-window range.

On the southeast side, there is a near-central late 20th-century two-storey addition. To the left of this addition is a large glazing bar casement, and to the right is a 19th-century glazing bar sash, followed by an 18th-century iron-framed casement with leaded glazing. Further to the right is a small 19th-century casement. Below these windows is a 20th-century door with an overlight. To the right of this door is a mid-20th-century shopfront featuring a central doorway and neon lettering. To the left of the shopfront is a blocked window, with a 20th-century door on the left and a two-light glazing bar casement on the right.

The gable end facing Queen Street has kneelers with moulded stone copings and a two-light leaded casement with a moulded cornice in the garret. Below this is a mid-20th-century shop window with neon lettering. The opposite gable features a mid-19th-century margin light sash and a blocked window both above and below. To the left of this gable is a late 18th-century single-storey lean-to addition that includes a three-light casement and a plank door.

Inside, the building has cased-in beams supported by iron posts.
