Description
This is a memorial cross located 400 meters north of Ceres Lodge, built in 1798. It is made of dressed gritstone and features a square base with an octagonal-sectioned cross that has domed ends. The south side of the cross is inscribed with the words "Fear God Honour the King ... 1798...Nile," while the north side reads "Love one Another." The base has an inscription on the south side that states "Deedes Not Wordes/God Save the Queen/Victorian Jubilee July 20 1897." The other sides of the base are inscribed with the phrases "Swear not at all," "Thou shalt not covet," and "Drink the ruin of millions." This cross was originally part of a group of memorials dedicated to the Battle of the Nile, erected by the owner of the Thoresby Estate, who was a naval officer.
