Description
The Nelson Pyramid is a memorial pyramid built around 1800. It is constructed of ashlar and timber, with Westmorland slate cladding. The structure has a square plan and features a portico on the north side, supported by Etruscan columns with square capitals. The frieze above the portico is inscribed with the words 'Palman Qui Mervit Ferat'. Inside the portico, the walls are inscribed on the left with the names of ships and captains who participated in the Battle of the Nile in August 1798, and on the right, there is an incomplete verse. The interior of the pyramid contains a round saucer domed chamber, which includes a fitted timber bench and panelled doors. This memorial is part of a group dedicated to the Battle of the Nile and was erected by the owner of the Thoresby Estate, who was a naval officer.
