Description

39-41 Carter Gate is a two-storey, five-bay building from the mid-19th century that likely originated as two separate houses. It now functions as two retail units following alterations to the ground floor in the late 20th century.

The ground floor units feature timber shopfronts and signage. The first floor is constructed of red brick and is topped with a pan-tiled roof, while the sides and rear are rendered.

The building is designed with two storeys and originally had a double pile layout facing Carter Gate. A two-storey extension added in the 20th century at the rear houses most of the leisure space for a pool hall and is accessed through number 41.

On the exterior, the ground floor front elevation has paired pilasters at each end with gable fluted brackets. The north side features a 19th-century timber shopfront with a central doorway flanked by two piers. The front unit on the south side has been altered to create a portico. The shop front of 39 Carter Gate includes two bays of two header panes above a large single pane, all resting on stallrisers. Access is through central timber double doors, which also lead to the first floor that has three bays of windows. The shop unit at 41 Carter Gate is set back under a portico and has wooden window frames along with a modern aluminium door. This unit also provides access to the first floor, which features two southern bays of windows. The first floor has a range of five six-over-six sash windows with painted frames, mullions, and cills. The eaves are cogged and dentillated. At the rear, there is a 20th-century extension made of painted brickwork with a flat roof.
