Description

23-27 Appleton Gate is a building comprising three houses that have been converted into two shops and offices. It dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. The structure is built of brick and features hipped and gabled roofs covered with pantiles.

The building has a rounded corner, a first-floor band, rebated eaves, coped gables, and two gable stacks along with a single ridge stack. It stands three storeys high and has a four-window range. The leftmost window is a segment-headed glazing bar sash, followed by a larger margin light sash, and then two smaller glazing bar sashes, with the left one being a dummy. The three flat-headed windows have rubbed brick heads. Above these, there is a small glazing bar sash, a larger sash to its right, and two smaller sashes, with the left one again being a dummy.

On the ground floor, to the left, there is a segment-headed glazing bar sash. To its right, there are two reeded wooden doorcases with flat hoods on curved brackets, featuring glazed doors and overlights. To the left of these doorcases is a late 19th-century wooden shopfront with panelled pilasters and a cornice, which includes a single-pane window. To the right is another late 19th-century single-pane shop window with a plain surround and cornice.

On the left side facing Mount Lane, there is a glazing bar bow window and to its right, a Yorkshire sash. Above these, there are two smaller Yorkshire sashes. Below, there is a central brick doorcase with a two-leaf beaded panelled door and overlight, and to its left, a segment-headed Yorkshire sash.
