Description

The Palace Theatre is a theatre and two shops built in 1920 for Miss Emily Blagg. The building was altered in the mid-20th century and subsequently altered and restored in 1988. It is constructed of brick with a stucco front and stone and stucco dressings, with hipped and mansard roofs covered in slate and artificial slate. A single external rear wall stack exists. The building is two storeys and comprises seven bays by twelve bays. The angled front features round towers at the corners, topped with cupolas having onion domes and coped parapets.

The main entrance front, on the left, has a dentilated cornice. It contains three sash windows with eared and shouldered architraves, incorporating swags above, with an altered framed panel displaying the theatre's name below the windows. A full-width entrance is found below, also with a dentilated cornice and two square piers, approached by steps with a wrought iron handrail. The shops to the right have four sash windows with similar architraves and swags, plus aprons. Below, two wooden shopfronts have bracketed dentilated cornices, with the right shopfront being double width and featuring a central door. To either side are twelve full-height recessed panels and a range of eleven windows, some of which are blank. The north-east side has four doors and six windows at ground level. The south-east end has plain round corner towers.

The auditorium was narrowed and refitted in 1988 and has an enriched, bow-fronted gallery on three sides, with boxes. It contains an enriched segmental proscenium arch. The plaster ceiling features an enriched dentilated cornice and cove-cornered panels with ventilators between them. The entrance vestibule has an enriched cornice and a beamed ceiling. Two pairs of segment-headed half-glazed doors are present, featuring oval sidelights and segment-headed stained glass overlights.
