Description
The Old House and adjoining Elderberry Cottage are a house and cottage located on Main Street in Norwell. The Old House dates from the 17th century, while Elderberry Cottage is from the 18th century. The buildings feature timber framing with brick nogging and brick, topped with steeply pitched pantile roofs. They have brick and stone plinths, plain and dentillated eaves, coped gables with kneelers, and single gable and ridge stacks. The structure is two storeys plus garrets and has an L-plan with two bays.
The west front of The Old House includes a single-storey, single-bay lean-to on the left, which is an 18th-century brick structure with a pantile roof, featuring a 20th-century door and flanking light. To the right, there is a corner post with a strut, and further right is a door flanked by single casements. Above this, on the left, is a 19th-century gabled dormer with a plain tile roof, and to the right are two casements. The south gable has two casements on each floor, plus a single casement in the garret.
Inside The Old House, there is a re-sited dogleg stair with a square newel, an adjoining stud partition, and two bay posts, one of which has a jowl and curved brace. The building features chamfered span beams, one with a broach stop, and principal rafter roofs with collars and clasp purlins. There are eleven 19th-century plank doors.
Elderberry Cottage has a 20th-century door and flanking light on the south side, along with a casement. Above, there are two casements. The east gable features a 20th-century door flanked by single casements, with the left casement having a segmental head. Above, to the right, is a casement, and above again is a 19th-century casement with a segmental head.
