Description

The Old Malt Shovel Public House is a public house located in Newark on Trent, dating from the mid-18th century, with a 19th-century rear addition and a full-width single-storey front added around 1900. The building is constructed of brick and faience, topped with a steeply pitched pantile roof. The main block features dentillated eaves, a single coped gable, and has two gable stacks, a single corner stack, and a single rear wall stack. It stands two storeys plus attics and has a five-window range of segment-headed glazing bar sashes, with a central raking dormer above that also contains a glazing bar sash.

The front addition includes a chamfered plinth, a sill band, a moulded coped parapet, and windows with moulded surrounds and keystones. The central entrance consists of a two-leaf 20th-century door with a keystone beneath a segmental pediment inscribed "The Malt Shovel." To the left of this entrance is a similar door with an overlight and a pediment inscribed "Vaults," along with two windows. The left side of the building has two glazing bar sashes, while the right side features a small sash window for the garret. Below, on the left, there are two glazing bar sashes and a smaller plain sash, all with segmental heads.
