Description
Barn Cottage is a cottage that was formerly a post office. It dates from the mid 17th century, with an extension added in the early 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick, while the original 17th-century wing was timber framed. It features a pantile roof that is hipped to the right over a projecting bay. There are single red brick stacks at the ridge and left gable. The eaves of the left 18th-century bay have a dentil detail. Originally, this was a two-bay timber-framed cottage, now two storeys high with two bays. The left bay, which is set back and from the 18th century, has a single tripartite casement window, while the right bay features a single glazing tripartite Yorkshire sash, both under segmental arches. The side wall of the left bay includes a doorway with a 20th-century door and a lean-to hood made of pantiles supported by wooden posts. Above the left bay, there is a single tripartite glazing bar Yorkshire sash, and to the right, another single tripartite Yorkshire sash. At the rear of the right bay, there is a lean-to, and to the rear right, a 20th-century red brick extension with a hipped pantile roof. Inside, there are remnants of a few posts, a studded panel with a curved brace, and many chamfered beams.
