Description
The K6 telephone kiosk is a standardised design constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns are located on the top panels. Rectangular white display signs read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment. One of the dome's four supporting pillars is cracked, and eight of the twenty-four large panes of glass have been replaced with polycarbonate.
The kiosk was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office, commemorating King George V's Silver Jubilee. It evolved from his earlier, highly successful K2 design of 1924, which drew inspiration from Neo-classical architecture. The K6 was streamlined, more compact, and designed for cost-effective mass production. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced before being largely replaced in the 1960s.
The kiosk is situated on Westgate, directly in front of the early 19th century boundary wall and gate piers to Dunham House, and in proximity to curved walls and gate piers of the mid-19th century. It has a strong visual relationship with Hilliers, 11 Westgate; Cromwell House, 13 Westgate; and 15 Westgate.
The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its iconic 20th century industrial design by Giles Gilbert Scott and for its group value in relation to five listed buildings.
