Description
Hardstaff Homes, located on Priory Road in Mansfield Woodhouse, are retirement homes for miners, now serving as Old People's Homes. Built in 1914 for Miss M. Hardstaff, the buildings exhibit a stripped Jacobean revival style. They are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and feature hipped and gabled roofs made of Westmorland slate. The gables are coped and have kneelers, and there are two external side wall stacks, each containing a small casement, along with a single roof stack.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of four bays in a C-plan layout. The windows are metal casements with moulded ashlar mullions and reveals, complemented by hood moulds. The doors are adorned with moulded architraves featuring elliptical heads and hood moulds, along with original furniture. The rainwater heads are dated 1914.
The south front displays projecting gabled wings at each end. On the right side, there is a door flanked by a single casement on the left and two casements on the right. Beyond this, another door is flanked by a casement on the right and a tiny casement in the chimney breast. Each return angle features a door, and above, there are four casements. The east end has a late 20th-century flat-roofed glazed porch and door, with a casement to the right and a flat-roofed cross eaves dormer above. The rear elevation includes four gabled single-storey outbuildings and regular fenestration with leaded casements that have segmental heads.
