Description

Nos. 79-91 Coronation Buildings is a row of seven shops built between 1936 and 1937, designed by Calvert, Jessop & Gleave. The buildings are constructed of white brick, with a red brick rear, and feature a hipped roof covered with Cumberland slates. The structure is two storeys high.

On the first floor, the street front has 11 windows, with a prominent central section that projects and contains five windows. The ground floor consists of seven shops, each with metal-framed shop windows, except for No. 85, which has wooden replacements and is clad in black Vitolite. Each shop has a central recessed doorway with a glazed wooden door, and there is a continuous projecting canopy across all the shop fronts.

Above the central recessed tripartite window, which is flanked by fluted pilasters and has rusticated edges, there is a semi-circular pediment inscribed with "CORONATION BUILDINGS 1937." On either side of this central window are two single 2-light casement windows. The central section features curved plaster coving and curved rusticated corners. The set-back wings each have three windows; to the left, there is a linked central pair flanked by 3-light windows, and to the right, a central 3-light pair flanked by 2-light windows.
