Description

Castle Mill is a former spinning mill and adjoining cottage, now converted into three houses, built around 1783 and remodelled around 1960. It was constructed by the Robinson family and features coursed and squared rubble and dressed stone, with concrete tile and slate roofs. The building has a partial rubble plinth, a crenellated parapet, and a single coped gable. It stands two storeys high with a basement and has six unequal bays.

The north front includes the mill building, which has two square crenellated corner towers, each featuring two blank roundels and a quatrefoil above. To the left, the basement has a blocked door flanked by single casements, and to the right, there is a door. Above, there are five casements on each floor. To the right, a 20th-century door with a hood is present, along with two casements above it. The cottages to the right have a casement flanked by a door on the left and a French window on the right, with a lean-to hood. Above this, there is a large square bay with three casements, flanked by two smaller casements.

The west gable has a casement on each floor. On the south side, to the left, there is a door and a French window. To the right, there is a segmental recess containing a French window, followed by a casement. Above, there are four casements, and above again, two more casements. Further to the right, there is a French window with a balcony and a casement. The mill's south side features two round-headed tailrace openings to the left, above which are five French windows with segmental heads. To the right, there are four casements, followed by nine casements above, and three casements with a French window and balcony above that. To the right, there are five more casements.

The east gable has a mid-20th-century square glazed opening to the left, a casement to the right, and remains of the wheel pit and flanking walls. Above, there are two casements on each floor. The interior has been refitted and features softwood span beams. Castle Mill is one of several spinning mills built by the Robinson family in the late 18th century.
