Description
The Griffins Head is a public house located on Forest Lane in Papplewick. It dates from the mid-18th century to the 19th century and features coursed rubble and dressed stone, with both slate and plain tile roofs. The building has ashlar dressings and shouldered coped gables, with a single ridge and three gable stacks. It is two storeys high and four bays wide, with an irregular L-plan.
The west front includes a gable on the left with a two-storey canted hipped bay window. To the right of this is a hipped porch supported by two columns, leading to a panelled door. Further right are two casement windows. Above, to the left, there are three casements in a bay window. The north side has a lower two-storey addition from the 19th century on the left, featuring two casements. To its right is an ashlar doorway with a segmental head, dating from the mid-20th century, followed by a casement window with a segmental head. Above this section are three casements.
On the south side, there is an off-centre glazed walkway from the late 20th century, flanked by three casements with segmental heads. Above this are four casements. The east gables feature a door with a segmental head, flanked on the left by a brick and stone stair and on the right by two casements. Above, to the left, is another door, with two casements to the right.
