Description
The memorial to the workers of National Filling Factory No.6 is located on the north side of Chetwynd Road, opposite Howell-Jones Road, near the former site of the Mixing House. It features a large truncated pyramid topped by an obelisk, with a square base. The concrete pyramid has a textured vermiculated surface and rests on a three-stepped base. Shell casings on the upper step form a chain that encloses the memorial, leaving an opening at the front.
Rectangular ashlar panels on the faces of the pyramid display dedications and the names of those commemorated. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face, positioned below Lord Chetwynd’s monogram, states that it was erected in memory of the men and women who lost their lives due to explosions at the National Shell Filling Factory in Chilwell between 1916 and 1918. It includes key historical facts about the factory, such as the first sod being turned on 13th September 1915, the first shell being filled on 8th January 1916, and the total number of shells filled, which amounted to 19,359,000, representing over half of the total output of high explosive shells produced in Great Britain during the war.
Additionally, a bronze plaque adorned with a military badge is located below the main panel. This plaque carries a dedication to the glory of God and in memory of those who gave their lives in both World Wars, with the phrase "We will remember them" inscribed on it. The bronze plaque also notes that it was unveiled on 30th June 1968 by Mr. James Boyden MP, in recognition of the bravery and fortitude of the employees during the 50th anniversary of the explosion at Chilwell, referred to as "The V.C. Factory."
The memorial is bordered at the rear and sides by a low coped wall and hedge.
