Description
Old Haggs Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century, with extensions and alterations made in the early 19th century. It is constructed of brick and features a plain tile roof with partial dentillated eaves. The building has two ridge stacks, a gable stack, and a side wall stack. It stands two storeys high and has five unequal bays in a single range.
The windows are small-paned 19th-century casements with segmental heads on the ground floor, which are now boarded up. The south front has two casements on the left, followed by a door with a gabled hood supported by brackets, and another casement to the right. An addition to the right includes a casement and a door with a segmental head. Above this, there is a gabled dormer on the left and three casements on the right. To the left of the main building, there is a single-storey stable, built in the late 18th century and rebuilt in the late 19th century, made of brick with an asbestos sheet roof.
At the rear, there is a lean-to outshut on the left featuring a sash window, and to the right, a smaller outshut with two casements. Above this, there is another casement. The stable at the rear has a slatted casement. Inside, the farmhouse contains winder and straight stairs, along with a mid-19th-century stone fireplace that includes a 20th-century kitchen range.
This building is significant as the home of Jessie Chambers, who was a friend of D. H. Lawrence, and it is mentioned in his novel "Sons and Lovers."
