Description

Building D6, formerly a pharmaceutical factory, was constructed in the 20th century from reinforced concrete. The building is rectangular, with 18 bays, and incorporates cantilevered storage areas and loading docks along its long sides.

Architecturally, the building features external piers supporting roof beams and cantilevered beams over the storage and loading areas. The flat and north-facing roofs have patent glazing. Deep projecting floor bands terminate in cornices. Windows are strip glazing casements within metal frames. The building is arranged over a single storey, with five and six-storey sections rising above. The single-storey area is a large, open space where the roof's weight is supported by cantilevered beams, with occasional vertical supports.

The asymmetrical southwest end has a projecting central section consisting of a six-storey, canted lift and stair tower. This tower is flanked by a single-storey office suite with a parapet. The canted central bay of the tower has slit casements, flanked by steps with three triangular aprons, a single door with overlight, a single canted window, and then three casements. Above, on each floor of the tower there are two canted casements flanked by single casements, with a set back bay to the left, and a cantilevered canopy over the car park to the right. The southeast side features a continuous loading dock with a concrete fascia above it. The northwest side has, to the left, two projecting hoist towers, each with a pair of set back flanking wings.

The interior includes continuous floor slabs supported by cruciform columns with flared heads. The entrance hall contains two coved columns, a deep faience dado, and a stepped ceiling with flush bronze lights, which may be modern replacements. The lobby entrance is tiled with buff and turquoise fluted ceramic tiles, and the floor features a geometric striped pattern of square yellow and turquoise tiles. Cantilevered concrete stairs ascend around the lift shaft, incorporating a small rectangular light well. In 1994-6, office accommodation was added; the partitions and fittings from this period are not considered to be of particular architectural interest. This asset was previously listed, but that entry was removed from the List on 23/04/2015.
