Description

Broadgate House, dating from the 1840s and altered around 1855, was originally built for Edward J.Lowe and is now the headquarters of The East Midlands Universities Air Squadron. The house is constructed of brick and painted stucco, with slate roofs and two external chimney stacks. A rendered plinth and moulded cornice and parapet are also present.

The north-west front has a centrally placed, blocked doorway, with a surviving fanlight flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Below are three similar sash windows. To the right is a two-story, projecting canted bay window with glazing bar sashes. The south-west front features a projecting central square tower, rising to three stories. This tower includes a doorway with double panelled doors and a flat hood supported by brackets. Above the doorway is a single glazing bar sash window, and above that, a smaller glazing bar sash window. The tower was added for Edward J.Lowe as a rooftop observatory. Inside, there is a single flight return staircase with an ornate iron balustrade.
