Description
The structure is a canopy for a former petrol station located at Markham Moor, built from concrete cast in-situ. It has a rhomboid shape, measuring 60 feet square. The canopy features a hyperbolic paraboloid shell design, characterized by sharp fins that rise towards the sky while the sides slope down to the ground. Its shape resembles a handkerchief, with two corners reaching heights of 37 feet 4 inches, while the opposite corners are just 5 feet above the ground. The central dip of the canopy is 18 feet 6 inches high. It is supported at its lower edges by four simple concrete stanchions. Beneath the canopy, a single-storey restaurant building made of brick was constructed in the 1980s. This building has plain elevations and deep fascias, with large areas of glazing on the main façades, but it does not have special architectural interest and is excluded from the listing. The interior of the restaurant features standard late 20th-century fittings typical of motorway service stations, which are also not of special interest.
