Description

Metcalfe House and Metcalfe Cottage are a mid-18th century house, later converted into a house and a cottage, with 19th and 20th century additions. The building is constructed of brick, which is rendered, and has gabled and hipped pantile roofs. A brick band runs along the first floor, and there are plain eaves, with three ridge stacks. All windows were replaced in 1984. The building is two storeys high and has a T-shaped plan, with a projecting rear wing.

The south front features a projecting two-story wing on the left, with a half-hipped pantile roof and a 19th century canted bay window with a hipped pantile roof. The bay window has a central glazing bar French window flanked by single glazing bar sashes. Above, there are three glazing bar sashes. To the right of this wing, the front has a central timber doorcase with a glazing bar overlight, containing a 19th century half-glazed door, flanked by two glazing bar sashes. Above the door are three similar sashes. A 20th century extension to the right has two glazing bar sashes, followed by a French window. The west front, facing the street, has a single glazing bar sash on each floor.

An approximately 100-metre-long brick boundary wall with a stone coping runs along the street. To the left, there is a single opening, and to the right, a gabled elliptical headed gateway with a timber lintel and a gate with two moulded ogee headed panels. Further along the wall, there is an entrance marked by two square brick piers, with 19th and 20th century additions, and moulded square stone caps.
