Description

The Kennels and Linking Kennels are two cottages built in the mid-19th century. They are constructed from dressed coursed rubble with ashlar quoins and feature slate roofs with barge boards and finials. The north front has a nine-bay, single-storey central section flanked by slightly projecting, single-bay gabled two-storey rear wings. The central doorway has a wooden door and is flanked by two glazing bar casements, with additional single doorways and similar casements. Each gable has a single similar casement on both floors, and all openings are surrounded by flush ashlar quoin surrounds.

The south front is set on a rendered, dressed coursed rubble and brick plinth and features six two-bay kennels. The rear walls of the cottages form the outer walls of the kennels, which include a sequence of windows and doorways: from left to right, there is a single window, two doorways, two windows, two doorways, two windows, two doorways, and a single window. All doorways have wooden doors, and all windows are glazing bar casements, also with flush ashlar quoin surrounds.

The kennels are separated by dressed coursed rubble walls that are one metre high, topped with triangular ashlar coping and cast iron railings with decorative spikes. A similar wall and railings extend across the front, interrupted by six gateways with cast iron gates, flanked by the projecting gable ends of the cottages. The left gable features two small glazing bar sashes with a single two-light glazing bar casement above, supported by a wooden mullion. The right gable end has a single similar casement on each floor, all with flush ashlar quoin surrounds. Additionally, projecting from the right wall and into the kennel yard is a dressed coursed rubble lean-to with a finial on the left and a single blocked opening.
