Description
The Gringley on the Hill War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in 1920, designed and made by Sharpe and Hoggard of Retford. It features a medieval-style cross made of Portland stone, with an elaborated cross-head and a carved 'sword of liberty' that runs down the upper part of the slender octagonal shaft. The shaft steps outwards at its base and stands on a hexagonal plinth, which has carved inscriptions highlighted with black lettering. The inscriptions read: "LEST WE FORGET/ TO THE GLORIOUS AND EVERLASTING MEMORY OF THE YOUNG MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" followed by names, and "ALSO THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945" followed by names. Below the plinth, the base steps outwards further, featuring a narrow bench-like projection at knee height.
